Riding Dirt in Maui

Aloha!

It has been awhile since I posted here, so I need to get on top of that.  I wanted to take some time to give a shout out to my buddies at Maui Moto Adventures.  If you are an adventure enthusiast, love to ride motorcycles, and want to ride in the most beautiful place ever (Hawaii), then call up my boys to go on the ride of your life!  How many people can actually say they have ridden dirt bikes in Maui?

Michael and Chris from Maui Moto Adventures will hook you up with all the gear you need to ride as well as bikes (KLRs and KTMs).  No need to pack your helmet or any protective gear because they have it all (including Camelbaks to keep you hydrated).  You can contact these guys by phone (808-419-8525) or visit their websites to see cool pictures and get more info at www.mauimotoadventures.com and https://www.facebook.com/MauiMotoAdventures.

There are so many options for riding here.  If you're not experienced in dirt riding, you can cruise by street on the very twisty, famous road to Hana (620 curves).  You will see waterfalls right next to the road, travel through jungle scenery, and have many beautiful photo opportunities.  If you are all about riding dirt, you will thoroughly enjoy all Maui has to offer off road (dirt trails zigzagging through jungles, volcanic scenery, waterfalls, and ocean views).

I have been riding dirt for only a month now (used to be all street) and have already been on some of the most amazing rides in that short amount of time.  My next trail riding adventure will hopefully be an overnight camping trip.

Preventing Joint Pain

Today's Tip:  PREVENTING JOINT PAIN
You can help to prevent or minimize joint pain by maintaining good
posture and muscle balance, exercising regularly and lifting properly.
For example, bend your knees and use your legs instead of your back
when lifting objects off the ground.  When lifting with your upper
body, allow your arms to do the work instead of your wrists or
fingers.

Easy way to track your cardio...Check it out!

Everyone keeps telling you cardio is the best way to shed belly fat, but you are having a tough time sticking to a routine for one reason or another...you don't know how far you just ran, how many calories you're burning, bored doing the same route day after day, and the list goes on.

I have some great new resources to help make your cardio routine a bit easier to manage:  www.mapmyrun.com is an amazing website to create new running routes, track your workout & nutrition progress, and so much more.  If you have a smartphone, it gets even easier!
"iMapMy is a fitness tracking application that enables you to use the built-in GPS of your mobile device to track all of your fitness activities. Record your workout details, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and route traveled on an interactive map. You can even effortlessly save and upload your workout data to any of the MapMyFITNESS websites where you can view your route workout data, and comprehensive workout history."
The coolest part about this website is in the upper left corner of their site.  If you're not into running, they have options for numerous types of cardio tracking (biking, walking, hiking, triathlons, fitness, and even snowboarding/skiing)!  This site is amazing!

Another great option for mapping your courses, is www.mappedometer.com by Google.  I have used this site quite frequently.  This site will give you a map of where ever you're located and then you click where your starting point was on the map.  From that point, you click on each street you went on or plan to travel on until your route is complete.  It places mile markers right on the map, so you know your distance markers and your final distance traveled.  These maps are easy to print.  The only downside for this site is it won't track anything off road (like beach running).  Otherwise this is a great easy site for creating cardio routes.

Now that you have some great tools to make your cardio life a bit easier, you have no excuse to get out and enjoy this beautiful day.

100 Days of No Processed Foods

Why Cut Processed Food...

  1. Processed foods are an illusion, often appearing to be healthy (with claims like low fat, low carb, vitamin fortified, no trans fat, contains omega-3s, etc.) when these foods are in fact the very thing making a lot of Americans unhealthy, sick, and fat.
  2. Coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer – four of the top ten chronic diseases that kill most of us – “can be traced directly to the industrialization of our food” according to Michael Pollan.
  3. Making smarter (and sometimes more expensive) food choices now may reduce your healthcare costs later in life.
  4. Why would one want to eat a processed food-like substance that is scientifically designed to never rot?
  5. The food industry has proven that it is not very good at seasoning our foods by adding way too much salt, sugar, and/or oil to almost everything.
  6. When you eat white bread and other foods made with white flour (which is a highly processed version of wheat) you are basically consuming empty calories with far less nutrition than the whole-wheat or whole grain alternatives.
  7. It is estimated that up to 90% of processed foods* in the supermarket contain either a corn or soy ingredient in the form of an additive under a variety of different names. Now how is that for eating variety?
  8. Cutting out processed foods could lead you to experience a variety of personal health benefits such as having more energy, losing weight, improving regularity, or just feeling healthier overall.
  9. Rather than counting calories, watching fat grams, or reducing carbs for “healthy eating,” simply eat whole foods that, as Michael Pollan puts it, are more the product of nature than “the product of industry.” It certainly is less complicated.
  10. It just makes plain old sense to fully understand what you are eating, be able to pronounce everything on the list of ingredients (if there is a list), and know exactly where that food comes from…don’t you think?

Paddle Fit

Whether you own a paddle board or just renting one for the holiday, experience the newest fitness craze of standup paddle board aerobics. Improve your balance, coordination, and agility while building core strength and having tons of fun. Paddle Fit incorporates calisthenics (push-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc) and balance training while you enjoy being out on the water.
History of Standup Paddling (from www.supglobal.com)

Stand up paddle surfing, or SUP, is a surface water sport, a variant of surfing where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water while standing on a surfboard. Stand up paddle surfing is derived from its Polynesian roots. The Hawaiian translation is Ku Hoe He'e Nalu; to stand, to paddle, to surf, a wave.
The popularity of the modern sport of SUP has its origination in the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. This is where the term "Beach Boy Surfing" originates, another name for Stand Up Paddle Surfing.

In the early 2000s Hawaiian surfers such as Dave Kalama, Brian Keaulana, Rick Thomas, Archie Kalepa and Laird Hamilton started SUP as an alternative way to train while the surf was down. As the years went on they found themselves entering events such as the Moloka'i to O'ahu Paddleboard Race and Mākaha's Big Board Surfing Classic. Now you can find Stand Up Paddle Surfers in many of the Outrigger and Paddleboard races as participants within their own division.

One difference between the modern idea of surfing and SUP is that the latter does not need a wave. In SUP, one can paddle on the open ocean, in harbors, on lakes, rivers or any large body of water. One of the advantages of Stand Up Paddle Surfing is the angle of visibility. Because of the standing height over the water one can see both deeper into the water and further across the surface of the water, allowing better visualization of features others lower above the water may not be able to see, whether it is the marine life in the harbors, lakes and coves or the incoming swells of the ocean marching on the horizon.
